Whiplash Injury Recovery
We most commonly associate whiplash with traffic accidents, but it can be a result of virtually anything that involves very high speeds and abrupt stops. Whiplash is a horribly painful injury to the neck that, if left untreated, can result in scarring, pain and disability that can impair someone for the rest of their life. The injuries resulting from whiplash can make it difficult to do even the simplest things, such as getting out of bed or just brushing your teeth.
Whiplash results from stretching the muscles of the neck far beyond their normal extension range. This type of injury happens when the body is thrust forward, leaving the head to lag behind, and stretching the muscles far beyond their usual capacity. Although most commonly associated with automobile accidents, whiplash can occur as a result of many situations, including:
- Roller coasters and other high speed rides at amusement parks, especially those that snap the body and head back and forth, such as bumper cars.
- Sudden trips and falls.
- Unexpected hits to the face, often from athletic participation.
- Motor vehicle accidents, including ATVs, snowmobiles, motorcycles, bikes, and even go-karts.
- Sports injuries, especially from high contact sports such as football and rugby.
Chiropractic treatments can greatly reduce pain and improve healing after whiplash injuries. One of the biggest problems with whiplash injuries is that due to the connection of the neck with the back and extremities, they can cause pain throughout the body, such as in your back or shoulders or arms. You may also be experiencing headaches, or have numbness or tingling in unexpected places. Chiropractic care can alleviate these discomforts, as it treats the tightness and misalignment of your muscles, bones and joints that often occur when you experience whiplash.
Massage can also help ease the pain associated with whiplash. By rubbing the muscles in the neck and back, this increases oxygen flow into the areas of injury, which can reduce swelling and increase the rate of healing. This is why we often utilize massage as well as chiropractic care into our treatment plans for whiplash injuries.
At Live Healthy Pain Centers, we have successfully treated many cases of whiplash, ranging from minor to severe. We have found that even “minor” whiplash causes damage to your neck, and it can result in chronic pain and disability if not treated appropriately. Our comprehensive, integrated, and holistic treatment plans include chiropractic care, medical consultation, massage, acupuncture, laser therapies, and medications if needed. When used in combination, we find there is a much greater chance of relieving pain and healing your whiplash injury.
